I think since ancient times humans have been worshiping Nature in one form or other.If i talk about India and some parts of the Africa in villages still even today they have their own religion and gods and goddesses.
But the most common thing i relates to deities is NATURE. They are worshipping Sun,Air,Trees in one form or other.
