Prehistoric painters used the pigments available in the vicinity. These pigments were the so-called earth pigments, (minerals limonite and hematite, red ochre, yellow ochre and umber), charcoal from the fire (carbon black), burnt bones (bone black) and white from grounded calcite (lime white).

Prehistory as acknowledge by the historian is the age before written records was in existence.

It records as the period 3.3 million years ago when humans were there without any civilization of theirs. The main source for knowledge regarding prehistoric period was through the archeological findings.

The most common medium used by the Prehistoric people was Stone.

Due to this, the period came to be known as Stone Age and it became major tool for hunting, painting, and different purposes. The Stone Age is further divided into three-

  • Paleolithic or Old stone Age(6 Lakh BC- 10000 BC)- Men were nomadic and hunter and gatherer and caves were used during adverse weather.
  • Mesolithic or Middle Stone Age (10000-7000 BC)- This considered as the transitional phase from Paleolithic to Neolithic age. Primitive Agriculture started during this period and Microlithic tools came into existence.
  • Neolithic or New Stone age (7000-4000 BC)- During this period, settled life started and agriculture developed with sophisticated tools for hunting and gathering.
