The work is calculated by multiplying the force by the amount of movement of an object. Work can equal zero in three different cases. When you apply a force the doesn't cause motion, the displacement is equal to zero. Therefore, the work done is equal to zero because W=Fd and anything multiplied by zero equals zero.
