Answer:

Calcium ... (c) 2K + 2H2 O → 2KOH + H2 ... Here carbon dioxide is a gas and thus confirms a chemical reaction. 24.

Answer:

The products of the reaction between KOH and CO 2 will depend on the ratio of the reactants present;-

If only one mole of KOH and one mole of CO 2 are present, then the product of the reaction is potassium bicarbonate (KHCO 3 ). eg ;-

KOH + CO 2 → KHCO 3

If KOH is present in larger than equimolar amounts, the excess KOH will react with the KHCO 3 already produced to form K 2 CO 3 and water. eg;-

KHCO 3 + KOH → K 2 CO 3 + H 2 O

The reason there are two possible products, KHCO 3 and K 2 CO 3 is that the acid produced when CO 2 and water react is a diprotic acid, called carbonic acid(H 2 CO 3 ). eg;-

CO 2 + H 2 O → H 2 CO 3

Diprotic acids are able to release their protons in two sequential steps, which results in two separate salts when reacted with monobasic alkalis such as KOH.
