Coffee plant requires hot and humid climate with temperature varying between 15°C and 28 °C and rainfall from 150 to 250 cm. It does not tolerate frost, snowfall, high temperature above 30°C and strong sun shine and is generally grown under shady trees. Prolonged drought is also injurious to coffee. Dry weather is necessary at the time of ripening of the berries.

The favourable geographical conditions for the cultivation of coffee are :

ii) Temperature : General temperature for coffee ranges approximately from 20℃ - 25℃ or 28℃.

iii) Rainfall : Well-distributed rainfall is needed for growth of coffee and thus a rainfall of 150-250 cm is required.

iv) Land : Sloping highlands, especially foothills of mountains and hilly slopes are suitable for coffee cultivation.

v) Soil : Coffee grows best in fertile laterite soil and red loamy soil.

vi) Shade : Coffee is a shade loving plant. It is grown under the shade of large and taller trees.
