Explanation:

Matter can change from one state to another if heated or cooled. If ice (a solid) is heated it changes to water (a liquid). This change is called MELTING. If water is heated, it changes to steam (a gas).

The conditions required to change matter from one state to another are temperature and pressure.

  • On increasing the temperature of matter, the kinetic energy of the molecules also increases. This leads to a change in state.
  • For example, solid changes to liquid on melting as it overcomes the force of attractions present between the molecules.Similarly, on reducing the temperature, the same liquid can change back to its solid state.
  • Also, change in pressure can bring about a change in state. For example, increase in pressure( and reduction in temperature) can lead to liquefaction of gases.
