The conditions when there is no change in the temperature of a substance even when it is being heated is latent heat.
Explanation:
- When you add heat energy to a substance and the temperature rises, the average kinetic energy of the particles is increasing. You’ll see this on a graph as a heating curve.
- When you hit the temperatures of the changes of state for that substance something else happens.
- To change state you need to overcome forces between the particles in the substance, and this needs energy. This is why when you heat the substance up at this point you don’t see an increase in temperature. It’s called latent heat because it is ‘hidden’.
- Once all of the forces between the particles have been overcome, the heat goes back into increasing the kinetic energy of the particles again, making the temperature rise.
- The changes of state can be seen as flat lines on the heating/cooling graph because of this.
