1. Death and destruction had been huge. It was believed that at least 60 million people or about 3 per cent of the world's 1939 population were killed directly or indirectly as a result of the war.

2. Millions more were wounded. Most of those deaths took place outside the frontline, unlike in earlier wars. Much more civilians died from war-related cause than soldiers.

3. Vast parts of Europe and Asia were devastated, and aerial bombardment or relentless artillery attacks destroyed several cities.
