When Antonio signed the fatal bond he did it so to help his friend Bassanio without thinking of anything else other than Bassanio's immediate need. However this led to Antonio being dragged into a case by Shylock and defended by Portia in disguise with the moneylender refusing to accept money and demanding Antonio's flesh. However Portia saves Antonio with her wit and quick thinking and all ends well for Antonio.
