Soil erosion is defined as the wearing away of topsoil. If the rainfall continues, water gathers on the ground, causing water flow on the land surface, known as surface water runoff, which carries soil away and deposits it elsewhere. There are different types of soil erosion caused by water.

The four most common soil erosion prevention methods are vegetation, geotextiles, mulch, and retaining walls. Preventing soil erosion is critical in protecting your property and exposed soil, whether from wind, weather, running water, and even the after-affects of forest fire.
