Hey,

Before understanding the condition to define the poverty line it is essential to understand what is it. Poverty line defines a threshold income and people earning below this value are termed as poor.

Criterions for deciding the poverty line in India:
The criterion for deciding the poverty line was done by the Suresh Tendulkar Committee in 2011.

According to them, defining the poverty line is based on the basis of monthly spending on food, education, health, electricity, and transport. So based on these, if a person spends Rs. 27.2 in rural areas and Rs. 33.3 in urban areas a day, they are defined as living below the poverty line.

1 - A common method used to measure poverty is based on the income or consumption levels. A person is considered poor if his or her income or consumption level falls below a given 'minimum level' necessary to satisfy basic needs.

2 - While determining the poverty of India a minimum level of food requirement, clothing, footwear, fuel and light etc are determined for subsistence. These quantities are multiplied by their prices in rupees. The present formula for food requirement while estimating the poverty line is based on the desired calorie requirement.
