The preparatory stage is meant for learners of the age group 8 to 11 years, studying across grades 3 to 5. The primary focus of this stage is to build both alphabetic and numeric literacy. Also, three different languages would be taught. These languages are to be decided by the states individually. However, logically speaking, two languages will be regional languages while one will most probably be English.

Since it is labelled as a ‘preparatory’ stage, it is evident that the knowledge and skills gained at this level are in preparation for greater learning in higher classes. So, the curricular needs would include:

1. Creating and retaining the interest of learners- It is an important part of learning. If students are not motivated enough, teaching will end up being a one-sided story. Also, since three languages will be covered, it is essential to encourage active learning, else learners will get confused between the three languages. Activities and educational props should be used liberally.

2. Multilingual and cross-disciplinary instruction- In order to reduce the tight compartmentalisation of the subjects, multilingual instruction should be allowed to a certain degree. For instance, learners might understand a numeric concept better in the mother tongue than in English, which is already a foreign language for them.

3. Ample practice- Students should be given ample opportunities to practice both their language and numeric skills. This practice should not be restricted to assignments and worksheets, but should extend to simulated real life situations too, with an aim to making them understand the practicality of what they are learning and its utility in life. Role plays can come in handy here.

4. Have enough time for teaching- Since the preparatory stage demands extensive practice and repetition of content, it is important to have enough teaching hours (which includes fun activities to reinforce concepts) allocated to each topic.

Explanation:

The students belonging to classes ranging from 3 to 5 are the ones who have learnt the basics of language, yet they need more knowledge about language and science subjects. The cirricular needs would be to strenghthen their grip on language, by arousing their interest in book reading, giving them some idea about debates and speech. Also in parallel, students should be taught about science subjects and also show the existence of science in their daily lives. Other than that, students should be involved in soprts activities to make them physically active
