Social media is an interactive computer-mediated technology comprising Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, among others which  facilitate the creation/sharing of information, career interests, ideas, & other forms of expression through virtual communities & network. This technology which asserts to having brought with it several advantages, is regarded as one of the most harmful elements of society

Houssein Derakhshan, an Iranian-Canadian blogger, in his article "Social Media Endangers Knowledge", ask us that with social media showing us exactly what we want to know, why do we have to search for information in an encyclopedia? How does it become irrelevant with respect to Wikipedia? Is there any point in the quest for knowledge?  Does the "quest for knowledge" become meaningless?

Explanation:

  • "Houssein Derakhshan" examines the "relationship" between the increase of "Social medias" & the decline in "thoughtful idea exchange". Derakhshan says that when it first emerged in the 1980s, development of the" Internet appeared to be a new era" of "text based communication" & "sharing of information". Modern Internet use is extensively used for "communication of images", such as "Instagram &  this "decline" is contributing to a "culture" based on appearance, looks, & status..
  • He argues that Wikipedia is the only "large-scale platform" on the internet which "models text oriented idea-exchange" & has the ability to restore "Enlightenment values" once again, if attended to through our culture.
  • Like all encyclopaedias before it, the principle behind Wikipedia was to compile the entirety of human knowledge. It is an aim that stretches back to the Islamic Golden Age, when numerous scholars, motivated by the famous judgement of Muhammad' Seek knowledge, even from China,' set themselves to collect and document all available information on a broad range of subjects, including translations into Arabic from Greek, Persian, Syrian, and Indian. In Europe, the attempt to compile a modern encyclopaedia began in the 18th century with the Enlightenment.
  • Our living rooms were not subject to the domination of television. It overturned all those mind habits, profoundly altering our world experience, shaping the actions of politics , religion, business, & culture. Many facets of everyday life have been reduced to entertainment, sensationalism and trade.
  • The Internet seemed to oppose this trend in the beginning. It was seen as a tool to "pursue knowledge", when it appeared in the late 1980s as a "purely textual medium". "Reason &thought" were highly valued in this garden, which was all derived from the "project of Enlightenment"".
  • Universities across the globe were amongst the 1st to link to this new medium, that "hosted informative personal/group blogs", "discussion groups", "academic mailing lists" & "forums", "electronic magazines". It was an "intellectual project" that was created in a "scientific research centre" in Switzerland.
  • This garden was wikipedia, so was "Google search" & its advertising model focused on text. And blogs were like that, valuing text, "hypertext (links), information, & literature". Effectively they democratised the ability to contribute to the global knowledge corpus. The "Web" has provided an alternate space for more than a decade which "challenged" the "grip of television" on society.
  • However, since then social networks have colonized the web for television’s values.. From Facebook to Instagram, the platform focuses our attention  on "video & images" and "rewarding" emotional appeals — rather than logical ones. Instead of a quest for knowledge, we are committed to a persistent, though unconscious, approach of immediate acceptance by an audience. It reduces our interest by telling us precisely what already we known & think on the basis of our profiles & interests
  • The challenge now is to save Wikipedia and its promise to collect and maintain knowledge freely and openly in the midst of the conquest of both new and old television. This doesn't mean that it's time to surrender. However, the decrease of the web and the resulting Wikipedia must be understood to be part of a much greater culture transition that has just begun.

Answer:

The dangers of Social Media

Explanation:

The Social Media has a power to create an idea that becomes an opinion. These days people are very conscious and alert about their life and whatever matter is of their interest. The Social Media has given power to people to speak and know.

Hossain Derakshan had observed a shift from an internet which was very decentralized, diverse, link-based, connected, curious, outward-looking and text-centered to a space which is image-centered, which is more about entertainment than discussions or debates or thinking. It is quite centralized and it's dominated by social networks. It's much less diverse. It is more about entertainment now. It has less serious content - including politics.
