Some defects if simple i.e. mercury barometer are :-
1) Mercury barometer is a fragile instrument containg a hazardous substance.
2) Mercury barometer do not have accuracy for the measurement of pressure below 1000 microns.
3) In case of mercury barometer there may be problems of containing and disposing of the mercury.
4) Mercury barometer is difficult to regulate.

5. The density of mercury will change with increase or decrease in temperature, so a reading must be adjusted for the temperature of the instrument. For this purpose a mercury thermometer is usually mounted on the instrument .
6. As the air pressure decreases at altitudes above sea level (and increases below sea level) the uncorrected reading of the barometer will depend on its location. The reading is then adjusted to an equivalent sea-level pressure for purposes of reporting.
