According to the Arrhenius theory, acids are the substances which furnish H+ ions in water and bases are the substances which furnish OH- ions in water. Hence this theory is limited to only those reactions which are carried out in aqueous media. Thus it limits the use of chemistry to those compounds which are stable in water. It is not defined for non-aqueous solvents and reactions carried out in non-aqueous media. Therefore it cannot account for the acidity and basicity of substances of substances which do not possess H+ or OH- species

The demerits of Arrhenius collision theory is

1) This theory is only applicable to simple gases, also for simple molecules .

2) It is valid for simple bi-molecular reactions only.

3) For reactions with highly complex molecules, the experimental rate constants are quite different than calculated values .

4) It neglects vibrational and rotational energies of the molecules taking part.

5) It doesnt consider the energy changes taking place during breaking and formation of bonds.

6) The rate of decomposition of HI, N2O5 at the same temperature, concentration are equal according to this theory but practically they are quite different
