Answer:
Generally speaking, a flood will occur when too much water tries to pass a certain area at once. The water than spills out into the areas that are supposed to be dry, like roads gardens and houses. This causes considerable direkt damage and also a lot of indirect damage due to interuptions in activities.
- As for the causes, “too much water on one place” usually occurs due to:
- strong rains in the flooding area. This are so-called flash floods
- combination of rain & melting of ice upstreams. These are the regular floods.
- Combination of high tide and wind - coastal floods.
- Prevention boils down to a combination of the following measures:
- build dams at locations with most valuable property
- Leave place for the water to flood elsewhere.
- Leave areas where water can seep in the ground rather than flowing down the street (for towns, obviously)
- Build flood-proof houses if you really need to build in flood prone areas. E.g, on the pillars.
Europeans have made a mistake to build too many dams in the past, which resulted in ocassional but extremely expensive floods. In the meantime we have started opening up some areas for the rivers to flood freely again. In this way, we will be able to assure that main cities stay flood-free, while also having some swamps for the birds and amphibians to live in… Plus losing a crop or two from some fields once in a while.
