The internet is the world wide web. This is the place where nearly anyone can publish nearly anything for nearly everyone to see and engage with. It is indexed and accessed by search engines, among other things.
An intranet is a business information and communications system - usually implemented with a specific piece of software (Sharepoint, Jive, Jostle, Thought Farmer). It is generally limited to employees of a company to view, publish and communicate. Often some shared resources will be restricted to specific teams or departments.
The point is to create a shared information and communication environment to help companies create a shared sense of awareness, resource libraries, collaboration spaces, calendars, etc.
Good intranets help with employee engagement, productivity and effective internal communications.
