Ground-level ozone is an air pollutant and is harmful to animals as it produces respiratory problems whereas stratospheric ozone protects us from the harmful ultra violet(UV)radiation of the sunlight by absorbing it.
In the stratosphere,some oxygen molecules absorb energy from the sun's UV rays and split to form single oxygen atoms
.These atoms combine with the remaining oxygen to form ozone which is effective in absorbing UV rays.
At ground level ozone is produced when oxygen is exposed to high energy(usually electrical or ultra-violet)
.Further action of sunlight on primary emissions mainly from automobiles also produce ozone at ground level.
