Fashion is something that a large community adopts for certain place and time.

A fad is something that becomes a favourite for many people suddenly, but its craze melts down within a few months time.

A fad does not often stay in demand even for a single season.

Staple is a product that is universal and stays in demand forever.

A merchandise planner needs to manage all these three types of products while creating his inventory. Ideally, staple items should be kept ready at all times, fashion items should be enough to meet the demands, and fad items should be created in enough numbers to accommodate the needs for a short period of time.
