Difference between alkanes, alkenes and alkynes is -

  1. Alkanes are saturated compounds while alkenes and alkynes are unsaturated compounds. Further, alkenes have double bonds while alkynes have triple bonds, making them more reactive than alkenes.
  2. The general formula of alkanes is C(n)H(2n+2), alkenes is C(n)H(2n) and alkynes is C(n)H(2n-2).
  3. The hybridization in alkanes is sp³, in alkenes is sp² and alkynes is sp, thus highest s character is in alkynes.
