Difference between alkanes, alkenes and alkynes is -
- Alkanes are saturated compounds while alkenes and alkynes are unsaturated compounds. Further, alkenes have double bonds while alkynes have triple bonds, making them more reactive than alkenes.
- The general formula of alkanes is C(n)H(2n+2), alkenes is C(n)H(2n) and alkynes is C(n)H(2n-2).
- The hybridization in alkanes is sp³, in alkenes is sp² and alkynes is sp, thus highest s character is in alkynes.
