Yes both are different ,both the election are held in-between the general election means before completion of its full-term but they are different .Basically In India there are three type of election .

General Elections

Mid-term Election

By Election

I should explain these -

General Elections:

It is the normal election like Lok Sabha Election ,State elections etc. In this basically members are elected after five years means the election which held after five years.

Mid-term Election:

If the Government falls due to in the Lok Sabha or the state Assembly before five years means before the completion period and no alternative government is possible, mid-term elections are held.

By Election:

It is held in case of vacation of any seat during the term of legislature. It may be by death, region cancellation of election commission or such other reasons.

Mid term Election---When elections are held much before the schedule, it is considered as the "Mid-term Election". The President can dissolve Lok Sabha and call a general election before five years is up, if the government can no longer command the confidence of the Lok Sabha, and if there is no alternative government available to take over.

By Election-- A special election to fill a vacant elective position with an unexpired term due to demise or resignation of the occupant.....
