germ cell - it is a sex cell or embryonic cell which produce gamete and fuses with opposite sex sell to form a zygote. it has half a number of chromosomes of somatic cells ( body cell)
zygote- it is a diploid ( 2 sets of chromosomes/ 2n)cell which is formed by the fusion of 2 haploid ( n/ a set of chromosomes) gametes, a fertilized ovum

Germ cells are gametes produced by meiotic cell division so they have haploid chromosomes. When these haploid Gametophytes unites,fertilization takes place and result in formation of zygote which have full numbers of chromosomes as the organism has,so zygote is diploid.
