Hunter-gatherers are small groups of nomadic people who hunt wild animals and gather wild plants for food. Hunter-gatherer communities tend to be small, 20–30 people. The reason for the small size of hunter-gatherer communities is that available food is a limiting factor. To illustrate my point, go to the nearest patch of woods and don’t come back until you have gathered or hunted enough food to feed yourself and your immediate family members. As you might guess, this might take a while.

There are two major drawbacks to hunting & gathering. First, is the lack of a stable food supply. You might eat well one day and then go hungry for the next week. Also, there is never enough surplus food to store away for droughts or long winters. The second disadvantage is that hunter-gatherers spend the vast majority of their waking hours trying to catch or gatherer enough food to keep from starving. Because so much time and energy have to be devoted to finding food, people in hunter-gatherer societies have a hard time inventing new technologies.
