sp3 hybridized carbon describes tetrahedrally coordinated carbon (carbon with four single bonds pointing towards the corner of a tetrahedron) 

sp2 hybridized carbon describes carbon with two single and one double bond, the three bonds pointing towards the corners of a triangle 

sp hybridized carbon describes carbon with one single and one triple bond, the two bonds pointing in opposite directions
