Genetic linkage depends upon the number of bases between two genes in a linear DNA sequence. Greater the number of bases between two genes, less are they linked.
This implies that if in a linear sequence, a pair of genes are very close, i.e., separated by less number of bases, as compared to a pair of genes which are farther apart and have more bases, the closer genes are more closely linked.
This should not be taken as “physical” distance on a chromosome, as the chromatids condense to form a chromosome. Therefore, two DNA regions very far apart can also condense and come together “physically”/spatially, but that doesn’t mean that they are closely linked.
