So firstly, there are 2 ways of digestion :-

Mechanical: Mastication - teeth cut and grind food, rolling action of tongue makes the food into a ball like shape, called the bolus. The bolus is swallowed through the esophagus into the stomach.

Chemical : Using enzymes and other chemicals to further break down food into smaller particles. Hydrolysis is the breakdown of food using water. Eg: Amylase breaks down carbs into simple sugars, Pepsin in the stomach further breaks down proteins.

The 4 phases of digestion :-

Ingestion: (taking in of food)

Absorption: (absorption of food and nutrients into digestive system)

Digestion is completed by the small intestine. By now, carbs are broken down into sugars, proteins into amino acids and fats into fatty acids and glycerol. These molecules are small enough to pass through the wall of the small intestine and into the blood. Nutrients from the food pass into the bloodstream through the small intestinal walls. The villi increase surface area, and are covered with microvilli that further increase the surface area

Assimilation: (after the breakdown and digestion of food, the body distributes the food to all the cells)

The dissolved nutrients are then taken into other parts of the body where they are assimilated as parts of a cell

Egestion: ( expulsion of undigested material)

Hope it helped! :)
