Different Generation Of Computers
1) First Generation (1941 - 1956) :-
◆ started with ENIAC ( Electronic Numerical Integrator And Computer).
◆ Consist of 18000 vacuum tubes and 700 resistors.
◆ Computer were very large and small.
◆ produce lot of heat and not much reliable.
◆ very slow processing
2) Second Generation (1956 - 1963) :-
◆ COBOL ( Common Business Oriented Language ) and FORTRAN ( Formula Translator ) were used.
◆ consist of transistors.
◆ cheaper then first generation computer.
◆ Require very little power.
◆ smaller than previous generation of computer.
◆ some reliable too and faster than first generation computers.
3) Third Generation (1964 - 1971) :-
◆ IC ( Integrated Circuit ) were used.
◆ IC's were also called semiconductor
◆ it combined electronic components onto a small silicon disc, made from quartz.
◆ much faster and reliable than first and second generation computers.
◆ Small in size against previous generation.
4) Fourth Generation ( 1971 - present )
◆ VLSI ( Very Large Scale Integration ) techniques used.
◆ A single chip can contain hundreds of thousands or even million of transistors.
◆ Fourth generation development is the spread of high speed computer networking.
◆ Faster and reliable than previous generation.
◆ smaller in size.
5) Fifth Generation ( present - beyond )
◆ Based on artificial intelligence ( AI).
◆ able to take commands in a audio visual way and carry out instructions.
◆ Low human intelligence required to perform any operation.
◆ parllel processing will possible.
◆ advanced in speed with reduce in the traffic.
◆ It is in the mind advance research scientists.
note : Dates for computer generations are not the exactly the same.
