There are four types of friction :

  • static friction - a force that keeps an object at rest. Ex : a towel hanging on a rack.
  • rolling friction - when an object rolls on the surface over another object , it is called rolling friction. Ex: wheel rolling on a surface.
  • sliding friction - is a contact force that resists the sliding motion of two objects or an object and a surface. Ex: child sliding on a slide in a park.
  • fluid friction - it describes the friction between layers of a viscous fluid that are moving related to eachother. Ex: swimming - swimmer's body and surface.
