Breaking down of glucose involves two processes.

In the first step, it is broken into three-carbon molecules called pyruvate. The pyruvate is further broken down into energy in following different ways in various organisms-

1) Aerobic respiration

In this case, pyruvate is broken down into water and carbon dioxide in the presence of oxygen along with release of energy. It commonly occurs in mitochondria of cells. It usually releases 36-38 ATP of energy.

2) Anaerobic respiration

In aerobic respiration break down of pyruvate takes place in absence of oxygen to give rise to carbon dioxide and Ethanol(a 2-carbon molecule). along with the release of energy. This process usually takes place in yeast during fermentation and releases 2 ATP of energy.

3) Lack Of Oxygen

There may be times when the oxygen supply in our muscles cells are not adequate. In that case pyruvate is broken down to lactic acid (a 3-carbon molecule) along with the release of energy. Buildup of lactic acid in the muscle cells during strenous activity causes cramps.
