The different ways in which glucose is oxidised to provide energy in various organisms are :

1 . Aerobic respiration - It is done in the presence of oxygen. In this pyruvate ( 3C + E ) is breaked using oxygen. Pyruvate is breaked in mitochondria. Then it may be formed carbon dioxide, water and energy.

2. Anaerobic respiration - It is done in the absence of oxygen. In this pyruvate ( 3C + E ) is breaked in the cytoplasm without oxygen. Then it may be formed carbon dioxide ethanol and energy.

The different ways in which glucose is oxidised to provide energy for various organisms are anaerobic and aerobic respiration.

  • Anaerobic Respiration
  • This process takes place in the absence of oxygen. An example of this process is the fermentation of yeast. In the fermentation of yeast, the pyruvate is converted into ethanol and carbon dioxide.
  • Aerobic Respiration
  • In this process, the breakdown of pyruvate occurs in presence of oxygen gas to produce 3 molecules of carbon dioxide and water. The energy released in aerobic respiration is much more than the energy released in anaerobic respiration.
