Hybridization is a hypothetical concept used to explain the procedure of formation of bonds and their geometries.

Basically there are 5 types of hybridization which we generally come across in our books.

1- sp hybridization (one s and one person orbital mixed together) giving linear shape to the molecule. Also refers to triple bond.

2- “sp2 “ corresponds to double bond. Generally give trigonal planar geometry.

3- “ sp3” and “sd3” Correspondens to single bond. Give tetrahedral geometry to the compound.

4- “sp3d” or “dsp3” - trigonal bypiramidal geometry

5 - “sp3d2” Or “d2sp3” - octahedral geometry.
