Answer:
The different ways of increasing production on the same piece of land are:
- Multiple cropping, in which more than one crop is grown on a piece of land during the year.
- Using of modern farming machines like tractors and threshers.
- Using of high yielding variety (HYV) of seeds.
- Applying chemical fertilizers, pesticides and artificial manures.
- Setting up proper irrigation systems.
Some drawbacks:
- The machineries are expensive and poor farmers cannot afford to buy them.
- Chemical fertilisers, pesticides and artificial manures does not allow the soil to replenish by itself. The salinity in the soil leads to disruption of natural nitrogen fixation in the soil.
- Chemical fertilisers and pesticides are harmful to our health.
- Fossil fuels and energy are used to operate irrigation systems and to run farming machines which causes depletion of natural resources and pollution of the environment.
- Fertilisers and pesticides kills micro-oganisms and other living species and upset the balance of nature. When carried by rain water and deposited in rivers, lakes and oceans they kill aquatic creatures. They also find their way into our drinking water sources and pollute them.
