Isomers are molecules that share the same molecular formula with another molecule but their chemical structures (structural formulae) are different (Lewis and Evans, 2011). They are distinctly different compounds with different melting points, boiling points, dipole moment and solubilities (Conoley and Hills, 2008). There are two main kinds of isomers in co=ordination chemistry: structural isomers and stereoisomers (Conoley and Hills, 2008). After butane the number of isomers for a particular molecular formula increases with the carbon chain length (Conoley and Hills, 2008). For example there are three different pentane (C5H12) molecules: n-pentane, a straight chain; 2-methylbutane, a branched chain and 2,2-dimethylpropane, also a branched chain (Lewis and Evans, 2011)
