The purpose of history is to throw light on the past. This is done through discovery and study of historical sources. Historians have divided the history into 3 periods for a better understanding of the facts.

The main sources of history are :

  • Coins
  • Artefacts and Monuments
  • Written material

Coins gives us lot of information. The writings on the coins tell us everything about that particular period.

Artefacts and Monuments :  

Artefacts were things made and used by earlier people. Household goods, items made of clay like dishes or toys, jewellery, coins are some examples of artefacts that have been found. These excavations at various sites gives us a clear picture of that particular age.

Written material :

Written materials and records found at these excavation also provide a detail description of the history of that period.

Oral sources  :

It is a method of collecting, interpreting and preserving the voices and memories of participant, people and communities in earlier events. It is a collection and study of historical facts involving individuals, families,  events, or day to day events through the usage of videotapes, audiotapes, or transcriptions of planned interviews.

Interviews are arranged with people who were participant or were witness to past events , whose perception and memories are preserved for future generations.
