Similarities between the “Ancient and Modern Olympics”; 1) Opening Ceremony, the competitors and umpires marched from Elis to Olympia (where the games were held for 1000 years). 2) Swore an oath on slices of wild boar, in front of the God, Zeus, promising good conduct. 3) The Olympic flame. 4) Running (200 and 400 yards), 5) Long jump, 6) Discus and wrestling. 7) Pentathlon, which involved the following events, 200 yard sprint, javelin- throwing, discus-throwing, standing long jump and wrestling. 8) Equestrian events which were different from today’s equestrian event. Ancient games, the equestrian event, involved four-horse chariot races, horse races and mule-cart races. 9) Boxing was also an event.
Differences between the two Olympics: 1) Ancient games were only for males, only freeman who spoke Greek could compete. Women were not allowed to watch the games either. 2) Participants and attendants were guaranteed safe passage to Olympia to compete. 3) A sacred truce a month before the games, so wars were postponed. 4) Cows were sacrificed between races, 5) The games were a Religious festival in honour of Zeus.
6) Eventually spectators and competitors, from the entire Greek world (which stretched from Spain to Georgia) were allowed to attend the games; 7) athletes, boxers and wrestlers competed nude. 8) The modern Olympics has more events and more countries competing.
