What are the distinctive characteristics of a virus compared to other microorganisms?
Answers
Explanation:
Viruses have some characteristics of living organisms.Such as, viruses contain nucleic acids and proteins. Inside living cells, viruses can reproduce ( by process other then mitosis). Viruses show the characteristics of non- living organisms when they are present outside the living organisms. Such as, survive for billions of years. They can survive very high temperatures, freezing cold etc., cannot move and cannot reproduce. Viruses do not possess any cellular machinery of their own because viruses are acellular and do not have their own metabolism, therefore they utilize the machinery and metabolism of the host for the purpose of self- replication.
Answer:
All viruses have is a protein coat and a core of genetic material, either RNA or DNA. Unlike bacteria, viruses can't survive without a host. They can only reproduce by attaching themselves to cells. In most cases, they reprogram the cells to make new viruses until the cells burst and die.
