Badminton can be quite lonely. While you can play it as part of a team, ultimately, you’ll be alone on the court, or with a maximum of 1 other player in doubles (which I played a LOT). I know the various advantages of children and teenagers playing team sports like soccer, basketball or European handball, and I feel I got hardly any of them. That in itself is not a disadvantage, but it becomes one when you compare it to other sports you could have chosen. I assume that if you play soccer, you immediately have a whole bunch of friends you can do a lot of stuff with, and the victories and losses are celebrated or bemoaned as a team. At Badminton, unless you win the tournament, you usually go home with a bit of a feeling of defeat, and you really have nobody else but you to blame. Not fun when you’re in your formative years, I found. I’m sure others might have better experiences, and as I said, at the time, it didn’t stand out for me, but now in retrospect, I wish I had done something different.

While there were sports where it was cool to be playing them (like handball or basketball), there was absolutely nothing cool to be associated with Badminton. I actually found it attracted a pretty nerdy crowd. Not bad today, but back in the 80s, not so ideal. So while for several years in a row, I was the no. 1 in my region, nobody at all would ever have heard of that apart from Badminton players.

With that lack of recognition comes a complete lack of any sort of prize when you win. In my whole career, the biggest win I ever had was 30 Deutsche Mark, about 15 Euros today. The train ticket to get to that tournament was almost exactly that, so at least I walked out without a loss - and I won that tournament!
