Before knowing about the drawbacks of Aristotle classification, let's know how he classified the organisms in the nature.
Aristotle's Classification:
- He mainly divided the organisms into two main groups based on their habitats.
- Firstly the organisms who live on the land, now known to be the terrestrial organisms.
- Secondly the organisms which live in the water, now known to be aquatic or marine organisms.
Drawbacks of Aristotle classification:
- This was not a good idea of classifying the animals in only two groups and on the basis of their habitats.
- Many organisms which were similar were placed in different groups. Like Whales and Humans both are mammals but placed in different groups.
- Many organisms were very different from each other but placed under same group.
