2. Irrigation requirement: India's huge water resources have helped in sustaining the agricultural output necessary to support a huge population.

3. Dams on rivers: Many hydro power projects are made and being made on the rivers. This will increase the energy production of India, besides flood control and canalization of rivers. Thus, it is important to drive other industries.

4. Tourism : Rivers are one of the main drivers of tourism industry in India. In India, river ganga is a huge source of religious tourism. In the mountain stretches, rivers serve as means for adventure sports.

5. Transportation : Rivers also serve as mode of transport. This advantage though has not been effectively utilised in India.
