Louis XVI provided support to war against Britain to free 13 American colonies which emptied the already drained treasury. Also, there was extreme extravagance in the Royal Palace. This added 1 BILLION livres extra to the 2 billion livres loan that already existed. In order to make ends meet, the king increased the taxes for the third estate who were suffering deeply from the already heavy taxes they had to pay. This is the economic cause of the French revolution.
