Answer:

Temperature has a direct effect on whether a substance exists as a solid, liquid or gas. Generally, increasing the temperature turns solids into liquids and liquids into gases; reducing it turns gases into liquids and liquids into solids

Let us understand the answer with the help of an example.

Suppose there exists a solid below room temperature (say < 25 degree celsius).

And, as we bring it to room temperature, (25 degree celsius), the kinetic energy in the particles of the solid increases (due to an increase in the heat).

So, the particles of the solid start to move and go far from each other. In this case, it becomes a liquid.

If the temperature is further increased (> 25 degree celsius), the particles of the liquid now move even father, thus, changing into a gas.

Hence, we can conclude that with the increase in temperature, solids change to liquids and subsequently into gases (except sublimes, which directly change from solid to gas or vice-versa.)

The opposite of this is also true. If a substance is a gas at a temperature > 25 degree celsius and we reduce the temperature to 25 degree celsius, it becomes a liquid and when the temperature becomes < 25 degree celsius, it changes to a solid.

This is because with the decrease in the temperature, the kinetic energy of the particles of the substance reduces and they come closer.

*The given example of temperature is just illustrative. Different substances have different boiling and melting points.
