What are the effects of non biodegradable substances on the environment??

there was a bad effect on the environment due to the non-biodegradable substances like plastic.because plastic takes maximum 500 years to be completely biodegradable..and it causes problem for the growth of plants.now a days we see many plastic packets and plastic covers on the road wastely..and they were not biodegradable and thus causes the more damage on the environment,mainly on the soil.
