What is an element?

An element is a pure basic substance that cannot be split into simpler substances by chemical methods. All the matter in the universe is made up of elements.

Each element is made up of only one kind of atom. Generally, all atoms of an element are identical although there are some exceptions.

There are 118 elements known till date, out of which only 94 are found in nature. The rest have been made by scientists in laboratories.

Hydrogen, sodium, oxygen, carbon, nitrogen, magnesium, aluminium, phosphorus, sulphur, zinc, silver, gold, mercury, calcium, iron, copper, lead and chlorine are some of the commonly known elements.
