The elements of s and p block combinedly called as representative elements.
- Representative elements are are elements which do not have a complete outermost shell. But the inner shells present in those elements are completely filled.
- Their outermost shell is not completely filled which means that they have less than 8 electrons.
- All the s and p elements are called representative elements except group 18 elements because the 18th group elements commonly called inert gases haved 8 electrons in their outermost shell.
- Thus it is concluded that representative elements include two blocks s & p and seven groups.
- S block elements that is the elements of group 1 and group 2 are reactive metals.
- P block elements include metals, non-metals and metalloids.
- S block elements are mostly ionic whereas P block elements shows a high degree of covalent character.
- In the representative elements that is both S and P block elements the first member of the group differ greatly from the other members of the same group. This is due to the small size and high electronegativity of the first member of the group.
- But they show a diagonal relationship with the second member of their neighbouring group. eg:Li & Mg, B & Si etc...
