The Site is situated along the Cedar River about one mile downstream from downtown Waterloo, Iowa. The primary contaminant associated with manufactured gas plants is called "coal tar". It contains compounds called polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons as well as benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene. Other contaminants found at manufactured gas plants include cyanide, arsenic, phenols and some metals. These contaminants were found in soil and groundwater at the site. Soil contamination was addressed through a removal action consisting of soil excavation that was completed in 2001. Operation and maintenance activities and monitoring for the Site’s long-term remedy are ongoing
