Answer:

Sri Lanka has been mired in ethnic conflict since the country, formerly known as Ceylon, became independent from British rule in 1948. A 2001 government census (PDF) says Sri Lanka's main ethnic populations are the Sinhalese (82 percent), Tamil (9.4 percent), and Sri Lanka Moor (7.9 percent).

There were mainly two social groups.. They were Sinhala- speaker and the Tamil- speaker

In Sri Lanka, the sinhala community enjoyed a bigger majority and could impose its will on the entire country. Sri lanka practiced majoritarianism in their country. The measuresof act 1956 introduced by Sinhalese government made the Sri Lankan Tamils feel alienated.
