Let us take an example of the engine which is at he front of a train.

The engine of a train gets a force F1 in forward direction from steam or coal burning or electricity. There is a frictional force F2 acting on the engine at the wheels in the backward direction. The coach behind engine pulls the engine with a force F3.  Then there is a normal reaction force N acting upwards by the surface of earth through the rails.  There is the weight W of the engine acting downwards from the center of mass of engine.

The net force is sum of these forces.

  F1 - F2 - F3 = net force on engine that makes it move forward = mass *
                                                                     acceleration

  W - N = 0  is the resultant net force. so train does not move upwards.

A glass is placed on surface of an open water tank. The glass has a weight W that pulls it downward.  The water exerts a buoyancy force B upwards on glass. The glass moves downwards with some acceleration.

Net force on glass =  F = W - B 

Buoyancy force =
           W [density of water * volume of glass / density of glass * volume of glass]

So netforce    F     =  W [  density of glass - density of water ] / density of glass

 This net force = mass of glass * its acceleration

A book kept on a table where the book exerts vertical pressure on the table for its weight and the table exerts pressure from below so the force gets cancelled.

In a game of tug of war when one team pulls one side and the other team the other side then the force applied by both gets cancelled.
