What are the expectations from residential schools?
Answers
Explanation:Expectations of the behaviour of all residential school staff
Whilst employed at an Open University Residential School all members of staff are representing The
Open University to students and to members of the public at the host location.
The University therefore expects its staff to uphold the highest standards of professional and
personal conduct at all times.
Anyone employed to work at an Open University Residential Schools has a responsibility and
obligation to act with integrity, objectivity, self-awareness and honesty and to ensure that their
activities, interests and behaviours do not conflict with this.
Bullying and Harassment
The University is committed to providing a place of work and study where employees and students
are afforded the dignity and respect to which they are entitled. Expectations of both staff and
students are set out in Bullying and Harassment Policies and Codes of Conduct (staff):
The university has separate codes to prevent bullying and harassment of both students and staff in
all Open University contexts including residential schools.
o Bullying can be defined as offensive, intimidating, malicious or insulting behaviour, an
abuse or misuse of power through means intended to undermine, humiliate, denigrate
or injure the recipient.
o Harassment can be defined in general terms as unwanted conduct affecting the dignity
of men and women. It may be related to age, sex, race, disability, religion, nationality or
any personal characteristic of the individual, and may be persistent or an isolated
incident. The key is that the actions or comments are viewed as demeaning and
unacceptable to the recipient – whatever the intent.
Personal Relationships
All Residential School staff have a professional and ethical responsibility to protect the interests of
students, to respect the trust involved in the staff/student relationship and to accept the constraints
and obligations inherent in that responsibility.
Residential School staff should familiarise themselves with the University’s Code on Personal
Relationships between Staff and Students and ensure that they follow its guidance at all times.
Failure to do so may result in the integrity of the University being undermined or a serious
disruption to the learning environment for other students and colleagues.
Even consensual relationships may involve an abuse of power and problems may occur should such
a relationship become non-consensual.
