Illiteracy is the root cause of many social evils in India. While India has an average literacy rate of 74.04 percent according to the census of 2011, however, it should be noted here that anyone who aged seven years and over, can read and write is considered to be literate.

Therefore, although those who considered to be literate find it hard to use the education in daily life. Secondly, access to education is limited because of the remote geographical location, minority groups, etc.

Therefore we can say that though India is fighting well against illiteracy, there is still a long way to go.
