What are the extrema of f(x)=(x−4)(x−5) on [4,5]?

Soln:

f(x)=(x-4)(x-5)

=x(x-5)-4(x-5)

=x²-5x-4x+20

=x²-9x+20

for extreme values put f'(x) =0

f'(x)= 2x-9=0. =>x=9/2

and f"(x)=2>0

so clearly it the function had minimum at x=2/9
